Health Promotion Is Severely Needed For Everyone - 2230 Words

Opening Statement Health promotion seems to be a thing of the past as more and more health care providers have their sights set on treatment instead of preventative strategies. However, health promotion is severely needed for everyone, but most especially individuals with intellectual disabilities and special needs. This demographic of individuals comes with their own set of needs and barriers, and are often at a higher predisposition for higher rates of illness; yet they deserve and have the same rights to effective illness prevention and health care as anyone else. What is health? In order to be able to advocate for the promotion of better health awareness in individuals with intellectual disabilities and special needs, it is imperative to understand that health does not just mean a person is not ill. Health can be described as, â€Å"a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being not merely the absence of disease or infirmity† (McManus, 2013). It is beneficial to think of desired health in terms of the biopsychosocial model. Proposed in the 1970s, George Engel made his proposal for the biopsychosocial model (Straub, 2014). This belief states that all aspects of health are reliant upon three factors: psychological factors, physiological factors, and social factors. Especially in these demographic of individuals, it is best practice to look at all aspects of an individual’s to examine it for quality in each three categories of the biopsychosocial model.
